Race Information
ENTRY FEE • $125.00 per crew, $30 per surf ski
DIVISIONS • Men & Women • Boats: Open, Veterans (+35) & Under 23s • Single surf ski: Open
Conditions of entry and race rules
- All crews and competitors must register in by 10am.
- All competitors must be financial members of a surf lifesaving club.
- Skis must be SLS spec. PFDs are encouraged for surf skis, but not mandatory. Course is never more than 200m from land.
- All boat crews will consist of five from the entering club, who are eligible to compete under SLSA rules.
- No substitutions are permitted during the race, however any of the crew may row or sweep as long as they meet the requirements of their age division.
- Rolling seats are permitted.
- Crews “nudging” the sweep oar of the boat in front of them will be penalised, at the discretion of the event referee, if the action continues.
- Crews must give each other room around turns and under bridges.
- Drafting is not allowed.
- All crews must follow Lake Burley Griffin traffic flow rules, failure to do so will result in disqualification
- especially when rowing beneath Kings and Commonwealth Avenue bridges, and at Acton Peninsula.
Pre-Race
- Competitors to check in between 8am – 10am.
- Boats must affix their boat number to the right-hand side of the bow, clearly visible as pictured.
- All sweeps MUST attend pre-race briefing at 10am where course layout and safety requirements will be delivered.
- Race Starts at 10:30am, with boats setting off at 30 second intervals, in order of race number.
The course
- Standing start from Kingston Island canal.
- Direct line through the two right-hand most arches under Kings Ave Bridge.
- Direct line to the right of the Captain Cook Memorial water jet.
- Through the two right-hand most arches under Commonwealth Ave Bridge.
- Shortest route to Springbank Island, exercising caution around Acton Peninsula, and keeping to the right of the buoy.
- Anti-clockwise around Springbank Island to Spinnaker Island.
- Anti-clockwise around Spinnaker Island exercising caution as you round the island, keeping to the right of the buoys.
- Shortest route to Commonwealth Ave Bridge, exercising caution around Acton Peninsula, and keeping to the right of the buoy.
- Through the two right-hand most arches under Commonwealth Ave Bridge.
- Shortest route through the two right-hand most arches under Kings Ave Bridge.
- Direct line to finish line, to the left of Kingston.
- The lake is not closed to traffic. Boats must obey local traffic rules, keeping to the right of buoys, fountain and when passing under bridges.
Boats will be led around the course by an IRB.
Parking
- There is some limited parking at Grevillea Park, but cars and trailers must not park on grassed areas.
- There is plenty of parking across Morshead Drive, through the roundabout at the top of Menindee Drive.
- Please drive slowly on unpaved areas and be cautious of pedestrians. Follow the instructions of officials.
